There has been much in the news lately about the benefits of Vitamin D. The average American is lacking in Vitamin D, especially elderly Americans (70%) and Americans of color (90%).
As the dark days arrive our source of natural Vitamin D (sunlight) is very limited - especially here in the dreary Northwest. Vitamin D is crucial for so many metabolic functions including bone formation, muscle and nerve function, and as an acid buffer.
Adults should get between 2,000 & 5,000 IU a day, depending on diet and lifestyle, preferably in the form of cholecalciferol, the active form of Vitamin D3. It's best from food sources (cod liver oil, fatty wild fish - herring or mackeral) but that can be challenging for most folks so make sure you get a high quality supplement, preferably in a liquid or sublingual form.
Some signs of Vitamin D deficiency:
- Restless Sleep & Fatigue
- Joint & Muscle Pain, swelling, cramping or weakness
- Poor Concentration & Memory
- Weight gain, obesity,
- Bowel & bladder problems
- Depression, especially seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
- Gum Disease & Tooth Loss
